A new role brings new responsibilities. For Mariusz, the transition from Lead Operator to Team Leader marked the next phase in his career on the shop floor. While he initially focused primarily on coordinating daily tasks, he now increasingly focuses on the bigger picture: the team, collaboration between shifts, and process stability. In this blog post, Mariusz takes you through his new role and explains what has changed for him since this step.
“For me, the transition from Lead Operator to Team Leader primarily means I have to look more at the bigger picture,” says Mariusz. “Of course, I’ll still be involved in the daily work on the shop floor, but my focus is shifting to the team as a whole and how the different shifts work together. It’s no longer just about what’s happening at a given moment, but about how everything comes together in the process.”
“In my role as Lead Operator, I learned a lot about coordinating work, supporting colleagues, and solving problems when they arise. I’m consciously bringing that experience with me to my new role. I want to continue supporting the team and ensuring everyone can do their job as well as possible.”
Leadership & Team
What do you expect from your team members in terms of responsibility and commitment? And what do you consider important in collaboration with operators on the shop floor?
“I expect my team members to take responsibility for their own tasks,” says Mariusz. “Safety and quality regulations are essential in this regard. If something isn’t right, I think it’s important that it’s reported immediately. When everyone takes responsibility, the entire process runs more smoothly and efficiently.”
“For me, good leadership starts with respect, clear communication, and a presence on the work floor. I believe it’s important to listen to the team and help where needed. When people feel heard and know they can count on each other, the daily work runs much more smoothly for everyone.”
Process & Quality
What areas for improvement do you see within the mixing process?
“Within the mixing process, I see opportunities to improve communication between teams. Sometimes the same problems recur, and better information sharing can help prevent them,” Mariusz explains. “Small improvements in daily work can ultimately make a big difference, both for efficiency and safety.”
How do you monitor quality and safety, even under high pressure?
“Even under pressure, I always try to adhere to standards and procedures. Especially when things are busy, quality and safety should never be compromised. Shortcuts sometimes seem like a solution, but they often cause bigger problems later.”
“For me, the key to a stable and predictable process lies in consistency and teamwork. It’s important that we respond quickly when something goes wrong and that we follow clear guidelines. Effective collaboration between people ultimately makes all the difference.”
Personal development
What will be the biggest challenge for you in this new role?
Mariusz says the biggest challenge in his new role will be finding the right balance: “Supporting the team while ensuring the work continues to flow smoothly. At the same time, I see this as an opportunity to grow further as a leader.”
“In the coming period, I especially want to further develop my communication, decision-making, and building a team culture based on trust and support. If the team grows and becomes stronger, I see that as my greatest success.”
